Day 1 of the 2021 Prada Challenger’s Trophy began yesterday with the RR1 (Round Robin) and RR2 race. INEOS Team UK sailed to victory against American Magic in the first race of the day. Then again INEOS Team UK outsailed Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli to win the second race.
Round Robin 1 Race 1
INEOS Team UK – Winner
American Magic – Looser
Round Robin 1 Race 2
INEOS Team UK – Winner
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli – Looser
Luna Rossa Challenge filed an official Claim of Non-Compliance (‘CNC’) against Ineos Team UK for use of a mainsail during Race 1 and Race 2 with an intentional opening in the skin in order to run an outhaul line through the opening, then covering up the hole with fabric so no air can pass through.
The race committee inspected the mainsail and determined that the feature is an intentional opening through the sail skin that is not covered or closed whilst racing, but “determined that this non-compliance with the AC75 Class Rule has not (or could not reasonably be expected to have) improved the performance of the yacht or has not (or could not reasonably be expected to have) had a significant effect on the outcome of a race.” Ineos.
Team UK was fined $5,000 USD, to be paid to the Sir Peter Blake Trust.
Race 3 was shortened from six legs to four mid-race because of light winds.
Yesterday’s victory gives INEOS Team UK a 2 point lead in the 2021 Prada Cup and they will advance to the Prada Finals. American Magic and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli will battel to determine who will sail against INEOS Team UK in the Finals.
The winner of the 2021 Prada Challenger’s Trophy will determine who sails against Emirates Team New Zeland in the 36th America’s Cup.
